On May 6, in the first round of the WTA125 Istanbul tournament, 15-year-old Sun Xinran from Longhua District, Shenzhen, defeated North Macedonia’s Giorchevska, ranked 191st in the world, with a score of 2-1. This marked her first victory in an adult WTA-level event. At just 15 years and 10 months old, she became the youngest Chinese player to win a WTA tour-level match, setting a new record in Chinese tennis history.
Playing as a wild card entrant, Sun faced a seasoned 31-year-old opponent and prevailed with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Her performance featured steady serves, precise baseline attacks, and composed handling of key points, demonstrating maturity and mental strength beyond her years. The win earned her 15 WTA ranking points, moving her from No. 746 to No. 678 in the world, marking her first entry into the top 700.
This breakthrough not only represents a milestone for Chinese tennis but also highlights the success of Longhua District’s integration of sports and education in nurturing young talent. Sun began playing tennis at age six. In 2023, she was recommended by the Longhua District Amateur Sports School to Shenzhen Hongshan Middle School, officially becoming a Longhua-registered athlete and entering systematic training. Inspired by Zheng Qinwen, she developed her own technical and tactical style and has achieved impressive results in domestic and international competitions.
2025 was a year of rapid growth for Sun Xinran. In April, she won the women’s team gold at the U15 World School Summer Games. In October, she claimed the ITF W15 title in Egypt, becoming the youngest professional tournament winner in Chinese tennis history at 15 years and 95 days. In December, she won the girls’ singles title in the prestigious Orange Bowl U18 category, becoming the first Chinese female player to earn this honor. Additionally, she has accumulated multiple ITF junior singles titles, professional-level wins, and a doubles championship at the China Open ITF junior event. Currently ranked sixth in the world junior rankings, she holds the title of National Master Athlete and is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in China’s next generation of tennis players.
Sun’s development is a testament to Longhua District’s deepened integration of sports and education. The district has implemented comprehensive strategies to promote youth amateur sports training, actively identifying and nurturing future talents. A notable initiative includes the regular “two-way opening” mechanism between the Jianshang Sports Complex and Hongshan Middle School, facilitating mutual access to public sports facilities and school venues. This provides young athletes with full support, including courts, equipment, and professional coaching.
Looking ahead, Longhua District plans to further enhance its integration of sports and education, improve the system for discovering and
