On Monday night, the Los Angeles Lakers were swept 4-0 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the reigning NBA champions aiming for a back-to-back title. Despite LeBron James’ strong series averages of 23.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.3 steals, it wasn’t enough to avoid his fourth career playoff sweep. Interestingly, history suggests this could be good news for the Thunder: every team that has swept LeBron in the playoffs went on to win the championship, spanning the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.
First Sweep: San Antonio Spurs (2007)
LeBron’s first sweep came early in his career. At just 22 years old, he carried a limited Cleveland Cavaliers roster to their first NBA Finals in 2007, only to face a harsh reality check against the San Antonio Spurs. Coach Gregg Popovich devised a defensive scheme that forced LeBron to take more outside shots and limited his drives, resulting in his worst playoff scoring average at the time (22 points) and a low shooting percentage (35.6%). The Spurs, led by Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginóbili, dominated. After the series, Duncan famously told LeBron, “This league is going to be yours soon.”
Most Heartbreaking Sweep: Golden State Warriors (2018)
By 2018, LeBron was an undisputed legend with four MVPs and three titles. He led the Cavaliers to their fourth consecutive Finals appearance, despite losing Kyrie Irving. Fueled by superhuman performances, LeBron averaged over 30 points in every playoff series. In the Finals against the Golden State Warriors’ star-studded lineup (Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green), he dropped 51 points in Game 1. But a critical mistake by J.R. Smith cost the Cavs the game. Frustrated, LeBron punched a whiteboard in the locker room and played the next three games with what he later described as a “practically broken hand.”
Sweep in Los Angeles: Denver Nuggets (2023)
In 2023, the Lakers entered the playoffs via the play-in tournament, adding fatigue. LeBron was also dealing with a foot tendon injury. Despite the 4-0 sweep, each game was close, including a 40-point effort from LeBron in Game 4. The Denver Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic, advanced to win the NBA Finals over the Miami Heat.
With the loss to the Thunder, LeBron now has four playoff sweeps on his resume, and the pattern remains intact: every team that swept him went on to become champions.
