After more than two decades, Real Betis Balompié has secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League. A stunning goal from Pablo Fornals sealed a 2-1 victory over Elche at the Estadio de La Cartuja, guaranteeing the Andalusian club a fifth-place finish in La Liga and a ticket to Europe’s premier competition.

The achievement marks a historic return for a club that first tasted Champions League football in the 2005-06 season but has been absent ever since. Under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini, Betis had already clinched their sixth straight European qualification, but this triumph erases recent disappointments in the Copa del Rey and Europa League, transforming both the club’s sporting and financial outlook.
The first half was played at the rhythm of events elsewhere, with Betis and Elche both aware of results in Vigo. Cucho Hernández opened the scoring in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a well-constructed move that allowed Fornals to find him. The Colombian’s low, precise strike beat goalkeeper Dituro to give Betis the lead. However, Elche responded just before halftime through Héctor Fort, whose cross-shot deflected off a defender and looped over the helpless Valles.
The equalizer initially unsettled Betis, but the second half brought a turning point. Elche’s Pétrot was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Antony, leaving the visitors a man down for more than 40 minutes. Betis piled on the pressure, and the winner arrived from a corner kick. Isco’s delivery was cleared to the edge of the box, where Fornals controlled, stepped forward, and unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, sending the home fans into ecstasy.
Elche pushed for an equalizer but could not find a way through. Betis held on, and the final whistle confirmed their long-awaited return to the Champions League, leaving Elche in a precarious position near the relegation zone.
