The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) has issued a significant penalty to the Shanxi Loongs following unsportsmanlike behavior by spectators during a playoff match against the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions. Shanxi is fined 50,000 yuan, and its home venue has been officially warned for failing to properly manage the crowd.

In the second game of the CBA quarterfinals, Shanxi fell short by five points against Guangsha, missing the chance to sweep the series and advance to the semifinals with a 2-0 lead. The series is now tied 1-1, with a decisive third game scheduled at Guangsha’s home court. This loss has cost Shanxi a golden opportunity to close out the series early.

Despite the setback, Shanxi still has a path forward. They previously defeated Guangsha on the road in the first game, proving they can compete away from home.

However, the troubling aspect of the home game was the repeated incidents of fans shouting insults at referees and chanting “biased referee” in unison. Such behavior created an unpleasant atmosphere and violated CBA regulations.

Following an investigation, the CBA confirmed that Shanxi’s home fans had engaged in widespread abusive language toward officials, causing serious damage to the league’s image. As a result, the league imposed a 50,000 yuan fine, deducted from the club’s league funds, and revoked Shanxi’s eligibility for the “Best Venue” award for the season.

Additionally, the CBA has ordered Shanxi and the Taiyuan venue to implement corrective measures, including better guidance for spectators and enhanced security to ensure orderly and safe games.

It is worth noting that Shanxi’s home arena has faced multiple warnings and penalties this season, yet the problematic fan conduct persists. The team must take these issues seriously and make fundamental changes to avoid further sanctions from the league.
