Mikhail Degtyarev, Russia’s Minister of Sports and head of the Olympic Committee, issued a Victory Day message, stating: “May 9 is a sacred day for Russia. Even in the most difficult years, sport remained a symbol of our people’s courage.”

“May 9 is a sacred day for Russia. There is no family in our country untouched by the Great Patriotic War; everyone contributed to the common Victory, often at the cost of their lives. But even in the harshest years, sport remained a symbol of our people’s courage. Football matches in besieged cities, nationwide tournaments, and sports broadcasts all lifted the spirit of the nation.”

“Athletes were at the forefront of those who defended the country. During the most difficult period of the Great Patriotic War, physical education students defended the approaches to the capital, while students and teachers of the Lesgaft University of Physical Education in Leningrad went to the front almost in full force. For this feat, the university was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.”

“From athletes, the famous Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of Special Purpose of the NKVD of the USSR was formed, carrying out bold operations behind enemy lines. They also made the legendary ascent of Elbrus, during which climbers tore down Nazi flags from the highest peak in Europe. All of this strengthened confidence in Victory.”

“Decades later, we remember these and other feats, take pride in the names of the victors, and thank our ancestors. On behalf of the entire sports community, I wish all veterans, children of the war, everyone who endured the hardships of that terrible time, and all who honor their deeds, long years of life, faith, hope, and love,” Degtyarev wrote in his Telegram channel.
